A Conversation with Mary Miller
 "I've been making prints for 35 years -- 40 years if I can count the wood block illustrations I did for 'The Prioress' Tale' in 10th grade.
Like most rural printmakers I'm largely self-taught.
And in the tradition of rural printmakers I find great pleasure in illustrating the life going on around me -- wherever I am.
The process of printmaking gives me great joy -- the carving and smoothing and color-mixing and inking the plates and printing the image by hand on fine cotton paper with a printer's spoon.
For fifteen years I've made prints of Eastern Shore people doing what they've always done -- living a rural life. I've had time to get to know my subjects; time to sit for awhile and listen to their stories.
Most of my block print work is about people. They show pretty much what I've found during a lifetime of observation -- we all do the day-to-day things of life pretty much the same no matter where we are.
My hope is that this work brings as much pleasure to the viewer as it has to the printmaker."
